Parent Education focusing on alternatives to physical punishment for disciplining children and teen-agers
Positive Parenting is a research-based, parent education curriculum that focuses on alternatives to physical punishment in the discipline of children and adolescents. It was developed jointly by family educators of the Minnesota Extension Service, University of Minnesota and University of Wisconsin Extension.
This interactive curriculum includes twenty hourly lessons addressing parenting issues from birth through teen years.
Each lesson includes:
- A brief video segment used to promote discussion and role modeling
- Parent handouts that provide further explanation of lesson concepts
- Worksheets
- Discussion aids
- Optional Reference list
The curriculum includes pre- and post-testing and lesson evaluations to assess learning.
Lesson content integrates problem areas which DFPS caseworkers typically encounter with families:
- Weak or absent attachment and bonding
- Lack of knowledge about developmental stages
- Parenting behaviors that erode the parent-child relationship

Antonia Lopez, LCSW and Rochelle McGowan, LCSW each have over thirty years of experience working with individuals and families in various settings and across the age span. They are familiar with DFPS client needs through prior experience and as independent contractors to complete Adoption Readiness, Adoption Home and Foster Home Studies. Their practice concentration is mental health.
Lessons are held in Bryan and Waco to serve a broader range of clients:
